Mercury

Astrologically, Mercury represents our capacity for thinking, learning and communicating. Linguistically, as a verb it is “to communicate”. It governs trade and commerce, negotiation and is a connecter or bridge between worlds, ideas and systems. The Greek counterpart to Mercury was Hermes, who was the messenger of Zeus, acting as an intermediary betwen Zeus and the other gods and the humans on earth.

In astrology it can be malefic or benefic, diurnal or nocturnal - it can tip the balance of energies one way or another. The god in mythology was a hermaphrodite - both male and female.

Mercury represents or Mind, and as such, it recieves input from our conscious (Sun) and unconscious (Moon) selves.

If there were a god of New York, it would be the Greek’s Hermes, the Roman’s Mercury. He embodies New York qualities: the quick exchange, the fastness of language and style, craftiness, the mixing of people and crossing of borders, imagination.
