The Four Elements in Astrology

The 12 signs of the zodiac can be grouped into four groups by element. The elements are Fire, Earth, Air, Water.

The Fire signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Fire signs represent the energy of life and spirit. They are action-oriented and have an “all or nothing” attitude. They are bold and move forward with force. They generate heat and energy and are courageous and purposeful.

The Earth signs are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. Earth signs represent substance and physical form. They are stable, passive and receptive. They tend to have very practical attitudes towards things. They are solid and stable - very grounded. They are very practical and want to deal with facts rather than ideas.

The Air signs are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. Air signs represent mental and social themes. They focus on abstract ideas and concepts, along with relationships and our place in the universe. They are all about ideas, thoughts and other mental processes. They are all about communication in a well thought out and rational manner.

The Water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Water signs represent emotional and spiritual themes. They can access deep, primal emotions and are more irrational and instinctive. These are the “feelers” - in touch with emotions and intuition.
